I think it goes without saying that it is bad for you and the baby so there is no need to lecture about that. I was a light smoker for years and found it very diffiult to quit. I did eventually but it was not immediate for me. I think it's different for everyone. The moment I found out I did try to quit - but still was sneaking that one here and there. I never thought it would happen but eventually I just stopped (I think the morning sickness 24/7 helped!). You will quit too - it will just hapen. It's not like your chain-smoking 2 packs a day. I was like you too, barely smoking and would get real mad at myself and feel sooo guilty when I slipped up and smoked just one. My aunt smoked (I'm pretty sure she chained-smoked) years ago throughout all her pregnancies - all of her children - just fine. At the time I was most worried about miscarrying. Now that I can feel her move so much and have seen her pictures - although tempted sometimes - I could NEVER ever do it again.

I feel so much better, although I have always been in great shape and have always worked out. I'm 32 1/2 weeks along. My daughter thus far has passed all tests with flying colors and my Dr says that my pregnancy to date has been very normal (with the exception of 2 uterine fibroids). This is my first child at 39 yrs old. Just had my last ultra sound at 28 weeks, she looks great and is a perfect weight.

Chewing gum really helped me as well as eating something. You're going to gain weight anyway!

Please keep trying - but don't kick yourself too hard - you are after all human and everyone's experience is different. Speaking from experience I know it is so difficult. I also know you will eventually do the right thing and that will be easy!

Good luck!!!
References :
Honestly, its not that hard to quit my dad was smoking for over 30 + years 2 packs a day of marlboro red pack. He had a minor health scare and cut it out his life completely.. Like I mean he quit with out any hesitiation of another cigarette, you havent been smoking for so long it should not be as tough, when you crave a cig throw a candy in your mouth or read, just picture you little one in your belly with a cloud of smoke or holding a cigarette, that might help. I dont smoke cig, but I did smoke hookah.. for few years occassionally, I completely cut that out and refuse to be around smoke my baby doesnt deserve it.
Good Luck and I hope you can pull through this :)
References :
21 weeks with first child, its a boy :)

STOP NOW! Damage is already being done to your baby that will effect him/her their entire life. The first two and a half months are the most important for cellular development. All disorders that would develop happen in this critical period.

This also includes "the patch" or gum. Nicotine is the chemical that causes ALL problems in fetal development. Studies beginning in 1997 (see whyquit.com for studies) show that nicotine is the cause of brian and lung damage in newborns. Also your child will face nicotine withdrawal which could lead to even more heart, lung and kidney damage.

This is going to be a test of your will power. YOU must decide today that I am not smoking ever again and stick to it. Everytime you want to smoke think of the growing baby inside you. If you can make it past that first three days the end is near. And past seven days you should be free of nicotine.

Buy green tea to help cleanse your body of the toxic build up that has resulted in your four months fo smoking. Also, make an appointment TODAY with your OBGYN. They will be able to put you on one of several medications being used to help women stop smoking.

I could fill a library with the thousands of studies and stories written about the effects of smoking on your baby. Below I have listed several links that provide facts grounded in sound science about the topic. Read for yourself what your smoking has already done to your baby.

Here is just the shor list of what could happen:
spontaneous abortions

ectopic pregnancies

other birth and delivery problems

fetal brain damage

growth retardation/low birth weight

lower or higher than normal infant blood pressure

problems requiring neonatal intensive care

infant death from perinatal disorders

sudden infant death syndrome

mental retardation

respiratory disorders during childhood

Attention Deficit Disorder

other learning and developmental problems

behavioral problems, violence, and criminality

smoking during adolescence

various adult health problems

cancer-causing agents in infants’ blood: potentially
carcinogenic mutations; and childhood leukemia

Extra or missing fingers and toes

Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW today. They can get you on a fast track to stop smoking.
References :
http://www.cdc.gov/reproductivehealth/TobaccoUsePregnancy/index.htm

Whenever you feel like having a cigarette, go get a drink of water. It is supposed to help with the craving....
Think about the harm it is doing to your baby.
Here is even a website explaining everything so it is fresh in your mind... you can maybe put it in your favorites, bring it up every time you want that smoke (while you're drinking your water)
In 2002, 12.2 % of babies born to smokers in the United States were of low birth weight (less than 5½ pounds), compared to 7.5% of babies of nonsmokers.
Smoking has long been known to slow fetal growth. Studies also suggest that smoking boost the risk of preterm delivery 37 weeks of gestation.
Premature and low-birth weight babies face an increased risk of serious health problems during the newborn period, chronic lifelong disabilities (such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation and learning problems) and even death.
Smoking cigarettes emerge to double a woman's risk of developing placental troubles.
Smoking in pregnancy also emerges to increase a woman's risk of premature rupture of the membranes. A woman with PROM may experience a trickle or gush of fluid from her vagina when her water breaks.
Cigarette smoking can cause reproductive problems before a woman even becomes pregnant. Studies show that women who smoke may have more trouble conceiving than nonsmokers.
References :
http://www.chantixpharma.com/smoking-and-pregnancy.html
