A friend wanted to share this gem of an idea to stop smoking cigarettes:
There is one very helpful way to quit smoking, and that is to become absolutely DISGUSTED by the mere idea of having another cigarette. When you can feel thoroughly repulsed by the thought of lighting-up, you’re ready to replace the smoking habit with something better for you.
So how does one DO that, you ask? “how do I get THAT grossed out by my cigarette habit?” It’s actually quite easy. Don’t cut down on cigarettes at all, in fact, you have to increase your ‘dosage’ all of a sudden, all in one sitting.
Do this in an enclosed room so there is hardly not much air circulation, have as many cigarettes on hand that you normally would smoke over the course of a whole day, and begin smoking them one after another. You cannot allow yourself to take a break from them, you must smoke them ALL – one after the other. The smoke should be allowed to infiltrate EVERYthing – your hair, your clothes, your bedsheets. Don’t take a shower before you go to bed, don’t change the sheets either – allow yourself to smell exactly what all non-smokers smell when smokers are puffing away on the vile stuff around them. You must give yourself the full impact of the disgusting odor – it is especially important that you can smell the stink of cigarettes in your bed pillow and your hair as you are falling asleep later.
That really ought to do it. Every time you think about having a cigarette after this experience, you should feel a strong repulsive YUCK! come over you. This may seem rather extreme – and it is – but if you want to quit …

If you truly want to quit smoking, cold turkey is the way to go. It is all about will power but you have to be quitting for yourself and not anyone else. If you really want to, you will make it. Good luck.

My father tried patches, gum, cold turkey, and everything in between. He went to a hypnotist in 1988. To this day, he swears that he remembers the entire session, that he was not hypnotised, and that the hypnosis had no effect and was a big waste of money. Of course, he never smoked a cigarette after that, either. Take what you will from that.

Just quit cold turkey. I promise it is the only way. For the first two weeks, you are going to be unbearable to be around. You will have to make a conscious desicion to not smoke every minute of the day for the first two weeks. But then it goes away. When I first quit, I would have my turn signal on in hte car getting ready to turn into the gas station to buy cigarettes. Then I would tell myself, i will die from this and I have a son who needs me to live. Find something that makes you love life, and makes you happy and use that as motivation. The people who love you want ou to be around. I am watching my mom suffer from COPD, caused from smoking. It will kill her, just like cancer would. She quit smoking, but it was too late. She knows that she maybe has a good five years left and she is only 49. All the things out there do not work. You have to have willpower. It IS possible to quit, you just have to have your mind right. You have to want to quit so bad that you will go through the times when it is going to suck really bad. It is probably one of the hardest things I have ever done, besides childbirth. But I smell good now, and I can taste food again. I can go to the gym and run and not feel like I am going to die. Please try it. It is the only way and you will start to feel so much better after you get past the two weeks. Good luck!!

Bottom line: you have to really want to stop. Not even hypnotism can force you to do something you don't really wish to do deep down inside. Smoking cessation aids, or removing yourself from your normal environment, can help you for a little while… but staying off the nicotine long term requires you to find a good source of inner motivation that you keep reminding yourself about. So don't do it for that people who are pressuring you, that won't work… what really matters to YOU?

Try weening yourself off of it. I was up to almost a pack a day when I decided to quit 5 years ago. I started out with little, realistic goals: not first thing in the morning, then not before noon, then not in my car, etc… after about 6 months, I wasn't smoking daily anymore. It took a while to kick the habit while drinking, but eventually that became the only time I ever wanted one, and it would taste to nasty and make me so light-headed I didn't even enjoy it. Nowadays, I get very random cravings every once in a while, but they pass very quickly. Good Luck!

The best way is to end up in the hospital and have the doctors tell you that if you dont quit you will die. I ended up in the hospital with a major heart problem, the doctors told me quit or die. I was forced to quit cold turkey!!! Its the only way to go, then you need to stay away from anyone who smokes for quite a while. I have been quit for over two years and still when i smell it, I want a drag. Quit before its too late, Now I have kidney cancer, and they say that you are three times more likely to end up with it if you smoke. You just dont realize how bad this stuff really is for you until it is possibly too late. Go buy some of the nicorette gum, dont buy much, quit right now, and only chew it when you get to the point that the cravings are so bad you just cant stand it anymore. Dont chew it on a regular basis or you will become addicted to it as well. GO COLD TURKEY!!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

I don’t believe that there is one solution that works for everyone. I really think that some people will be able to give up using one way or another, but some people will simply find it impossible. It’s those individuals that are truly trapped. I believe for this category it is important to think pragmatically and let them use nicotine replacement products that do not harm them in the way traditional cigarettes do.

i have smoked for 30 yr.i have tried patches, gum, zyaban, nhs smoking groups and have tried hypnosis. now i feel its not the products that have failed…its me!but i tell you that i do not intend to give up trying.secretly what i would like is to be locked up for a month with no cigs. that cant happen so i will be going to the doctors to tell him and may try the new tablet that i think is called champax.if i manage to succeed then i will let you all know.if you dont hear from me again then its probaly cos i have no more breath in me to get to the computer…while this may sound like a joke i can tell you that smoking is the worst thing i have ever done in my life.am i alone in this struggle.i doubt it.
