in 2005 i got sick with the flu. i decided it was a good opportunity to quit smoking, since i was doped up and groggy from medication for 4 or so days. i just slept alot. it was hard, but i ended up switching to cigars to satisfy the habit. you have to deal with the nicotine drug addiction as well as the habit.

There is just the one way. I was a heavy smoker, woke up one morning and decided I really didn’t want to do it any more. That is where your mind has to be. Read Allen Carr – he’s irritating but the message is solid: It doesn’t make you feel good, its like setting light to money – in short, it is a really stupid thing to do. Once you no longer accept your own excuses for lighting up – just think, no more fitting your life around cigs – make a list of all the plusses. Then, get hooked on willpower. Just say "No thanks, I don’t do that." Every cig moment that passes is a milestone. One hour, one day, one week, one month. You’re going for the record. Believe me, every milestone you pass you feel stronger. The key moments are measured in three days – 3rd day, 3rd week, 3rd month. After the 3rd month, you’ll feel like a non-smoker and other people’s smoke will be repellant, not enticing. If getting your head right first doesn’t come easy, try banning cigs from, say, the car – or a particular room. The proliferation of public bans helps, but ENJOY the smoke free living. I began with a new car and decided I didn’t want to foul it up with smoke, ash and butts. Within a fortnight I came to the decision at the start of this answer. To quit you have to REALLY WANT TO QUIT. Once you do, its easy – don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Last cigarette, Dec 8th 2001. December 9th woke up, thought of going to newagents for fags, decided I didn’t want to smoke any more. And I haven’t. And you can do the same. And will do.

Just my experience
I failed many times, patch, gum, lozenge, inhaler, Welluburtin, Zyban etc
I had a reason the quit, they increased taxes another $10 a carton to pay for public pre-pre-pre school (only smokers paid for it)
In other words only smokers paid for baby sitters for yuppie babies
I spent a week getting an average of have many times I lit up and how far apart. ( start was 1 every 5 min)
Then once a week I would extend the time by 5 min
Got down to 0 smokes a day 23 months ago and been w/o since. I can have an alcoholic during w/o wanting a cig, I can eat w/o wanting a cig
LOL
BTW it also took about 14 months to start feeling better ( think it was the quantity)

Chew mint gums when you decided to smoke. dont sit around with smokers. tell you friend that you wanna quit. and they noe they will not offer you.set a date when you wanna stop smoking
When you have stop smoking. dont try to smoke again even one puff.
