Stop Smoking Cigarettes

How do I help my father stop smoking cigarettes when he’s had the habit for over 30 years?

You can’t make someone quit smoking especially
after 30 years. All you can do is hope they will. This has to be their decision. You could encourage him to stop but that rarely works because it is an addiction.

welbutrin (not sure on spelling) My whole family used it to stop smoking. No matter how long you have smoke you supposedly just are able to quit.

I agree with the wellbutrin advise above. I think its typically used for depression, but it made me naeseous at the smell of cigarette smoke… which made me quit. But I also wanted to quit and I wasn’t a 30 year smoker. Another thought is motivating him by telling him you want him to be able to know your children… that you don’t want them to only know him through old photos. And that you want him to be there for the milestones and special moments of your life. He may argue that he’s been smoking for 30 years, its too late now. But I would guess there is some research out there that would disprove that argument.

    Good Luck.

Beg him! Say, "Dad, I LOVE YOU, but I cant stand being around you cuz you smell, you stink like a nasty cigarette. I know a woman who loved her father (ME) and desperately wanted to be with him for the last weeks of his life, but she couldnt bear the smell for more than a few minutes!!! she wanted him to live in her home, to love and care for him, but she was too afraid he’s burn the house down in his sleep killing her family, her husband and child!!!" Dad , Please, stop, go to the doctor or pharmacist, do whatever it takes, but stop smoking so we can all be together and love each other, dont let this ‘drug’ take away our time together — PLEASE, DADDY, PLEASE — I LOVE YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!! Do you love me enough ?????

did he ask you for help? if not, dont spin your wheels….if he did, then all you can do is be supportive. bring him a nicotine patch here and there, praise him for his effort… he has to do everything else on his own. even you could refer him to a support group if you know of one.

Not much you can do. MY mom is 76 and I am 52, she has smoked my whole life and now has a pace Maker, but she is still smoking those Cigarettes. Its a terrible Addiction and extremely hard to quit. She tried the patch and Gum, they did NOTHING for her.
