Hi, I Am happy for you and your decision to save your life! There are loads of ways to quit! I quit by trying patches... After one day I quit the patches too because I told myself if I can do it with them I could quit without! I haven't touched one since.. Even 6 months later when my best friend died I still steered clear. It only takes a week or so for the cravings/bad moods to go. After this, I found that I had the just smoked feeling of relief constantly for about 8 months! Everything becomes amazing! Feeling fitter, happier, being able to taste food, having Money, staying warm/dry instead of fag breaks! You can quit cold turkey or with supplements e.g. Niquitine. Techniques to resist the urge (well some of hundreds) include
Not hanging around with smokers.
No boozing till your clean
Look on the net for smokers lungs, cancer stories, chemicals inside etc.
Think of how much you spend, then say you can buy yourself a specific item of your choice from the money you save!
Think of long term happiness above short term satisfaction.
Think of quitting as a cold (my fave!) something temporary which you just HAVE to endure!
If you can't resist and have one... Don't beat yourself up and go back to regular smoking, just see it as a stutter and keep going!
Remember there is NO physical presence forcing that crap into your mouth and making you suck... YOU are in control!
I wish you the very best luck
Don't give up giving up!!
References :
Self

It takes commitment and you have to want to. It took quite a few times trying before I was completely "done". I tried every few days for like a month. I knew I had to do something with my hands to prevent me from smoking so I got a hobby. Crochet was my hobby, maybe there is something you like that can keep you busy :)
References :
I smoked for 6 years and I smoked a pack a day. I needed a cigarette or two each half hour, otherwise I would go nuts. I quit 3 times, but the problem was I drank more beer, because both of them go together. So I quit drinking first.....

One month after I was sober, I decided to quit smoking. I prepared myself ahead of time. I bought Nicoderm patches.

Here's my tip, before you put the patch, smoke as many cigarettes as you can. After you finish one, you light another. You keep doing this until it makes you sick and you don't want to touch another cigarette ( I think it took me 8 cigarettes in a row)

Once you are to that phase where you had enough of smoking cigarettes in a row, put the patch on. After a few weeks, you won't feel like smoking anymore. The last 4 weeks of using the patch, you might feel as if you don't need the patch that has the lowest dose of nicotine, but keep it as a measure of security.

That's how I did it, and I have been smoke free for 6 years.
References :
I smoked for 15 years and gave up cold turkey. It's the only way. The other ways - gum, patches, etc, just tease you until you have to start again.
It took 2 years before I realized how incredibly healthy I was and never got out of breath or coughed all the time and had far less illnesses generally.
You need to know who is in control of your life - you or the smokes.
