Most people know that smoking decreases the appetite. This doesn’t mean you can’t quit while you’re trying to lose weight! In fact, losing weight should make you more aware of your health, and as you try to develop a healthy lifestyle, what better time to stop smoking cigarettes? Think of how much easier it will be to exercise, whether it be jogging, hitting the gym or just taking a stroll around your neighborhood, when you’re not wheezing or coughing.

Actually, smoking cigarettes decreases appetite and therefore can increase weight loss, but it is highly unhealthy and if your trying to lose weight and get healthy, it's just about the stupidest thing you can do as the physical damage will come to toll much quicker than that of a few extra pounds.

From what I have read, smoking somehow interferes with insulin overdoing its natural function (putting food in cells), so smoking interferes with the gaining of weight.
A diet plan that reduces insulin production by reducing intake of sugars both straight and the natural kind in carbohydrates can assist in reducing not only the waistline, but the underlying need for smoking, which might be hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
For basic information on hyperinsulinemia, check out http://www.mayoclinic.com and search for hyperinsulinemia.
